Was heißt das, Musik mischen ?

-              Einführung in DJ Software (Freeware)

-              Hausaufgabe: ein kleiner Mix

Workshop 2: Wie entwickle ich meinen eigenen Stil + Focus: VINYL

-              Gemeinsam hören wir in unsere mitgebrachten Mixe

-              Feedback Runde

-              Wie sucht man eigentlich nach Musik ? Was für Plattformen gibt es ?

-              FOCUS: Vinyl: was ist daran eigentlich so cool ?

Workshop Series @Utopia Kiosk Winter 2026

Mix n Wax—An Intro-Level Workshop Series on how to mix with and without Vinyl

It’s Friday night, you don’t have the energy to go out, but somehow you still feel like hitting the dance floor—all by yourself? If only there were the perfect mix for that.

There can be, because anyone can become a DJ(ane), be that at home, in a club, on the beach, in your own bathroom, or this winter at Utopia Kiosk.

This workshop series is for anyone who loves music and has always wondered what a DJ actually does. What does it mean to mix music? And what exactly can you do with it?

Together, we’ll explore this topic—from genres and history to technology, equipment, and how to put together a set.

The goal is to spark joy and curiosity and, above all, to share music with one another and perhaps even discover new musical genres for one self.

Workshop 1: Introduction to and Overview of DJing and Various Music Genres

- A brief overview of what to expect from the workshop series

- A brief introduction to the history of disc jockeys

- Listening and sharing session

- What exactly is electronic music? Does it always have to be dance music?

- Introduction to various dance music styles and how to recognize them

- Introduction to various DJ techniques and equipment

- Introduction to DJ software (freeware)

- Homework: a short mix

Workshop 2: How Do I Develop My Own Style + Focus: VINYL

- We’ll listen together to the mixes we each recorded as a homework

- Feedback session

- How do you actually search for music? What kinds of platforms are there?

- FOCUS: Vinyl: What’s so cool about it? How can I learn this?

- Where can I practice in Stuttgart?

- Some basics on analog vs. digital: What does that even mean?

- A brief overview of sound engineering, studio equipment, and what I should ideally have for a small setup (e.g. good headphones)

Workshop 3: FOCUS on CDJs, various mixers, and digital DJing (e.g., using just a laptop) and how to record sets

- We’ll take a look at CDJs and controllers from the Pioneer series

- What is a mixer actually used for? What kinds are there?

- I don’t have any equipment and can’t buy any: what are my options?

- To wrap things up, we’ll briefly discuss how to plan your first set for an audience or a performance at an open mic event

You can register for all three workshops or just one of them.

About me:

Mary Lilith Fischer studied creative writing and cinema studies in the U.S. At the university’s conservatory, she additionally took classes in electroacoustic music and studio recording. She also worked as a stagehand for sound engineers.

After graduating, she moved to Berlin and opened a project space there called The Workshop on Forster, which included, among other things, a music studio. The weekly program featured writing and painting workshops as well as music production and DJ workshops.

Mary Lilith wouldn’t describe herself as a DJ, though she did spin records for a couple of years under the pseudonym Marlon. What remained, however, is a deep love for vinyl, ecclectic transitions and the search for the perfect mix.
